Drupal Taxonomy

Taxonomy's meaning is the
science of classification. In Drupal terms, it is the method used to
organize your sites content using different types of relationships
between terms.

You will need to know several terms to get the most out of this system:

Term - The term used to describe content. Can also be referred to as a descriptor.

Vocabulary - This is a list of multiple terms that are related in some way.

Taxonomy - The categorizing of content in a hierarchical structure.

Tagging - The process of associating a term to content on your site.

Adding a New Vocabulary

When
working with vocabularies, it is important to know that your site can
belong to multiple vocabularies at once. Vocabulary terms can be
modified dynamically as you add new content or additional vocabularies
to your site. This helps to save the trouble it would take to manually
update your site's relationships each time.

The taxonomy module
in Drupal will let you have multiple lists of classification and
categories. It gives you the option of creating thesauri (terms with
horizontal relationships) and taxonomies (terms with hierarchical
relationships). The taxonomy works with a hierarchy of content and the
thesaurus deals with the relationship between terms. Taxonomy is what
determines how your site's content ends up being organized.

1. You can access taxonomy by going to Administer -> Content Management -> Taxonomy.

2. With a new Drupal installation, your vocabularies list will be empty.  You can start a new vocabulary by clicking the Add Vocabulary button.

Managing Vocabularies

You have 3 options when managing your existing vocabularies:

Edit - Changing the settings your set when creating the vocabulary.

List Terms - Display all of the terms currently in the vocabulary.

Add Term - Allows you to add a new term to the vocabulary.

After you have added a new Vocabulary you can edit each by clicking the corresponding edit link. You can adjust the terms order by clicking the + icon next to the term and dragging it in to the desired position in the list.
